Discover Our Single Vineyard Rieslings
Monday, February 19, 2018
Our single vineyard Rieslings are among the most terroir expressive in our wine portfolio. They are also as unique as the women they are named after. And while all of our Rieslings are of excellent quality, the 2016 Eugenia Dry Riesling and 2015 Margrit Dry Riesling highlight the differences between our Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake vineyards.
About the Vineyard of Origin:
The 2016 Eugenia Dry Riesling is sourced from the oldest Riesling block in Dr. Frank's estate vineyards, which is known for its especially high shale content and steep slopes. We believe that greater complexity was achieved in this wine by utilizing these old vine Rieslings, which were planted in the early 1960's. Additionally, the cooler climate and shale content at this site contribute to a more pronounced minerality and acid structure.
Wine Characteristics: Bone dry with great acidity. Dominant characters of pineapple, stone fruit, and key lime. The crisp acidity enhances the distinct Keuka Lake minerality. All elements are perfectly balanced to make a wine that will last and continue improving for several years.
About Eugenia Frank: The wine is named after Eugenia Frank, wife of Dr. Konstantin Frank. Eugenia Frank was Dr. Frank's biggest supporter, encouraging him to pursue his PhD in Viticulture. In the early days, Eugenia was also Dr. Frank's personal "palate" for his wines. Her incredible sense of smell and taste contributed to the success of Dr. Frank's wines.
Vineyard of Origin: Sourced from our Hector, NY vineyards on the south east side of Seneca Lake. This part of Seneca Lake is often referred to as the "banana belt" as it is one of the warmest areas in the Finger Lakes. The higher year-round temperatures facilitate higher levels of ripeness in our grapes from this location.
Wine Characteristics: The 2015 Margrit Dry Riesling was barrel fermented for 10 months in French oak to add complexity. This wine exhibits tangerine, Granny Smith apple and grassy notes with a balanced acidity.
About Margrit Frank: The wine is named after Margrit Frank, wife of Willy Frank. Margrit is known for her warmth and hospitable nature. When Konstantin Frank passed away and Willy Frank took over the family business in the 1980's, Margrit stood by Willy's side, helping him grow the winery's reputation. Many writers today still recall Margrit's wonderful hospitality.
